Guns of Icarus Online

Guns of Icarus Online (also known as Guns of Icarus Alliance) is a steampunk-themed multiplayer first-person shooter video game developed and published by American studio Muse Games. Captain a steampunk airship and fly with your friends in this thrilling MMO air combat game set in a post-apocalyptic world. Join a few of your friends to serve aboard an airship, or get a captain’s license and your own ship, crew it with your friends or some hired hands, and set sail for adventure as you brave danger-filled skies to deliver precious cargo and fight off air pirates and rival factions.

SUMMARY:

Three hundred years have passed since the Great War consumed the planet. Three hundred years since the human race ate hungrily of mother earth, squandering resources that could have carried them forward for millennia.

In the heat of the sun, there is an unsettling, inescapable truth: man has fallen from his throne.

Humanity now lives among the ruins left by a century of conflict, but from the wrecked steel of the past they will forge their own future. Lighter-than-air technology has inspired intrepid pioneers to take to the skies in search of trade and resources to support their towns and families. Enterprising craftsmen fashion elaborate machines out of scavenged scraps. The desperate and ruthless take what they can by force.

Despite all that was lost, a renewed passion for invention has emerged, along with a deep respect for the fragility of life. Explorers and philosophers travel in search of forgotten knowledge now scattered beneath the wastes.

The survivors are inventors, pilots, captains, craftsmen, adventurers, fighters, privateers, merchants, engineers, farmers and scholars. They herald a new age for humanity: an age of rebirth.

Gameplay:

This game is contained in the three classes of Gunner, Engineer, and Captain. Each has a specific and vital role to fulfill, be it manning the guns, making repairs, or piloting the ship, and each player must respond on the fly to rapidly changing conditions. Gunners may abandon their guns to repair a vital component, or the Captain may ditch the wheel to add a little more firepower to a broadside sweep. On the small scale, the game is about the thrill of flying and moment-to-moment airship combat, with its strategy, skill, and frantic action, and the teamwork of a well-knit crew where everyone has a job to do. These experiences are the core of the PvP combat mode in the initial release.

Players can choose three different classes: gunner, engineer or pilot, which will allow them access to different kinds of tools. The captain of each ship chooses which weapons to use in his/her ship and chooses which ship will they use in the game. Here are some of available ships.

  • Galleon ship – the biggest and more resilient ship, but also the slowest one. It focuses on high firepower and tank capabilities with high hull armor.
  • Goldfish ship – has a main gun on its prow, and two secondary guns on the port and starboard sides. It relies on its moderate speed and high maneuverability.
  • Junker ship – has high maneuverability, but a slow speed. Has 5 small weapons mounting.
  • Squid ship – the fastest ship, allows its commander to outmaneuver enemy ships, but it is the least resilient ship and does not have access to a Heavy Weapon.
  • Spire ship – has a very high turning speed, but a very low linear speed. It is a high dpsship with very low hull armor.
  • Mobula ship – has great vertical movement, but is hard to repair in the heat of the battle. Also has 5 weapons in front.
  • Pyramidion ship – this ship is very versatile. Has two guns on the top deck and two on the low deck. With very high damage output, but slow turning speed.

This game added several game modes to this game, a faction war gameplay system where players play matches to earn war effort so that their faction can take over or defend pieces of land on a map of the game world, and, at Alliance’s launch, it contained four joinable factions and four new playable ships. The four added new ships are

  • Magnate ship – this decorated ship is slow-moving, but has three guns on each side; two light gun mountings and one heavy, allowing for the Magnate to have a high damage-per-second.
  • Shrike ship – the second fastest ship after Squid. its hull is weak, and has only average turning speed. This ship has two heavy and light gun mounts on the port and starboard sides of the ship, making the Shrike preferable for “hit-and-run” tactics.
  • Crusader ship – this ship is large and heavily armed, with two heavy guns on the front and two light guns on either side, allowing for a wide frontal attack range. It has good vertical speed, but low health and armor.
  • Corsair ship – the largest ship and is heavily armoured and slightly faster than a Galleon, and has two heavy guns and light guns on each side, as well as a heavy gun on the front and light gun on the stern, allowing the Corsair to exhibit high damage within limited intervals due to its speed and amount of weapons.

And added another two ships after Alliance launch.

  • Stormbreaker ship – A patchwork airship, this aircraft has extremely fast acceleration and decent speed, as well as fast turning. Its firepower is concentrated on the port side, with one heavy gun and three light guns lined along this side of the ship. It is nimble, but has low health and armor. This is the faction specific ship for the Arashi League.
  • Judgement ship – this ship is versatile and has high armor, but indecent forward and turning speed, as well as low health. Its firepower is concentrated towards the front, with two heavy guns and three light guns.

Choose your ship from nimble chargers to powerful broadsiders, equip it with a deadly arsenal, and enter the fray. Blast enemies out of the sky with a salvo of rockets, lay traps with strategically placed air mines, destroy their engines with arcs of lightning, or cripple their balloon with a torrent of flames. All things that fly, must come crashing down.

Verdict:

Guns of Icarus Online is all about teamwork, tactics, and fast-paced action. With a good ship and the right crew, you can conquer the skies! The game is a real genre buster, on one side offering a downloadable game that brings a superb multiplayer experience and in the future offering an almost story like mode of adventure that you can then use to tie back into multiplayer style death match gameplay, meaning there should be a setup for this game that pleases fans of shooters, RPGS and more but like with most things, persistence pays off, and as your skills and knowledge grow, so does your enjoyment.

Sundered

Sundered is a horrifying fight for survival and sanity, a metroidvania game published and developed by Canadian studio Thunder Lotus Games. It is a hand-drawn epic from the creators of Jotun. Resist or embrace. Sundered is a love letter to Lovecraft.

Like Jotun, visuals are colourful and cartoonish. It’s stunning in motion, but the grand and intricate style masks a wealth of darkness creeping under the surface. As you explore the labyrinthine underworld in non-linear fashion, things go from weird to weirder. Be careful the deals you make in the darkness; you can never fully know just who or what you are dealing with… or what their offers will truly cost you.

Sundered is set in a beautiful hand-drawn world with character models that are just as lovingly crafted. This style creates monsters that are a stunningly designed, yet terrifying in their Lovecraftian inspiration. Their movements, attacks, and ever their death animations have a luring quality about them that it can be easy to lose yourself in appreciating the work that went into their design. The problem is this: there is often a LOT of them on the screen!

GAMEPLAY:

Players of this game plays the role of Esthe a wanderer in a ruined world, trapped in ever-changing caverns filled with hordes of terrifying enemies. Harness the power of corrupted relics to defeat gigantic bosses, at the cost of your humanity. Eshe encounters the Shining Trapezohedron, which grants her the power to defend herself. The two begin to travel the caves together. Upon travelling the trapezohedron explains that their civilization, an Eldritch theocracy known as the Eschaton, was at war with an invading force known as the Valkyries, who used advanced technology to fight their eldritch magic.

Eshe is a capable fighter, lithe and quick, the game has a tendency to lay the enemy encounters on heavy, with swarms of crawling, leaping and spinning creatures attacking while laser-firing enemies’ beams tracked me from three screens away.

In this game players must traverse a side-scrolling world and unlock new abilities to progress. These are unlocked at shrines, and the player can also open shortcuts that provide a faster way across the game’s world. The game makes use of some random elements, as enemy hordes will spawn randomly and try to attack the player. Additionally, after every death, the passages connecting the game’s areas rearrange themselves using procedural generation. You play a character exploring the interconnecting ruins of two warring civilizations, and battle against the corrupted remnants of the previous inhabitants., In order to survive you are granted powers by a mysterious being that pretty clearly doesn’t have your best interests in mind. The sprawling world map is made up of areas which rearrange every time you die, connected by points that can only be traversed through the use of specific power-ups, in classic metroidvania style. Players must do the most important decision for this game – whether to “embrace” or “resist” when it comes to the game’s powerful Elder Shards. Accessing the magic of these Shards grants you new abilities at the expense of your humanity, eventually permitting you to climb up walls and sprout wings to glide. But it’s also possible to destroy the Shards instead, which grants different types of abilities and allows you to maintain your humanity and eventually get a different (not necessarily better) ending.

The game has supported for up to four players in a local co-op experience. The implementation of co-op play is smooth and seamless, allowing new players to be added or removed via the pause menu, without the need to start a new game. And this new players will appear as colorful shadows of Eshe, the game’s main character, and have all of the same unlocked abilities. When the avatars head in different directions the game’s camera zooms out to keep all players on screen, up to a point, but will eventually default to the first player. All players share the same health pool, but have their own shields and other resources.

Overall, this game is a great fit for everyone and there’s really no reason not to give it a try. Just for the novelty of sharing a game like this with friends. 👍 If you are looking for a challenging Metroidvania game with a darker feel than Dead Cells with a replay value, Sundered: Eldritch Edition is worth the descent into madness.

Battle vs. Chess

A chess game inspired of Battle Chess. It uses the Fritz Al and offers various variations of the chess theme. Bringing the successful chess game principle into the present-day multimedia world, witness animated fantasy figurines assemble in magical worlds and await your command in the strategic Battle vs Chess.

Gameplay:

This game is more similar to the game Battlegrounds where the success of a move is determined through a mini game (when the attacker loses, the piece is set back to its previous position). The two variants are slasher (the player controls a chess piece directly which can attack, dodge and block, the goal is to break through the enemy army and kill the target) and duel (the fight between two pieces is shown from the side and the player needs to perform quick-time events in order to hurt the enemy). The other single-player modes are classic (regular chess with optional randomized piece placement), campaign (two campaigns with 15 missions – chess matches with special rules and starting positions- each), various chess puzzles and a tutorial.

There are only two figure sets in Battle vs. Chess, but these two figure sets are very well animated and detailed. Unlike the much more recent Pure Chess on PS4, Battle vs. Chess has fully animated figure sets. In addition there is also a non-animated Staunton figure set in light-brown and black which is sometimes nice because it is less distracting and allows you to concentrate on the game.

The individual chess matches take place in one of several background settings, which also fit into the theme of good vs. evil.

In this game. There is a campaign mode containing two campaigns, the good army and the evil army campaign. Each campaign is a series of chess variants. Not one of the matches in the campaign is a normal chess match with FIDE rules, but rather each game is a chess variant with some “fantasy” rules added, or variations and imbalances to the armies. Only some of these chess variants would be worth replaying, but they are all worth playing and winning at least once to advance in the campaign. The campaign mode is highly addictive.

In addition to the campaign mode, you can of course also play endless matches against the computer at any desired difficulty. You can play the entire game with normal FIDE rules, or with the chess variant rules in the campaign mode, respectively. However, you can also switch the engine to one of two action modes. In action mode, when you try to capture another figure, you have to battle it out a bit like in the classic Archon. If you win, you take the enemy figure as if you had been playing with normal FIDE rules. If you loose, your move is negated.

There are also two action modes possible, one is a quick-time event like mode and the other is a massive skirmish where all 4the figures on the board start moving and fighting somewhat reminiscent of Dynasty Warriors.

All I can say is that I love this game! This is a game for everyone who loves to play chess so much. The graphics are outstanding and the game itself are filled with overflowing contents and brilliant ideas. A very fantastic game! I bet everyone would be in love with this game. ☺
